The useful answer
Yes, Provincetown is open in December
December is quieter, not closed. A core group of restaurants, markets, cultural institutions and services operates year-round, and Holly Folly plus First Light bring additional businesses and visitors back into the center of town.
The important distinction is between a normal December day and a holiday itself. Christmas Day has more closures. Holly Folly weekends are busier. First Light has its own dedicated What's Open list from the Provincetown Business Guild. So the smartest approach is to know the reliable year-round anchors, then confirm any one place you are counting on for a specific holiday date.
This guide sticks to businesses and institutions that currently publish year-round, winter or December information.

Mac's Fish House
85 Shank Painter Road. Mac's explicitly says it is open year-round and publishes current weekly hours plus a market next door.
Open year-round
Liz's Cafe, Anybody's Bar
31 Bradford Street. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, with the restaurant describing itself as open year-round.

Open year-round
Fanizzi's
539 Commercial Street. Daily year-round service, with a clearly published exception for Christmas Day.
The Canteen
The Canteen is especially important in December because its normal restaurant and its Holiday Market overlap. The Provincetown Chamber describes the market as a weekend-focused seasonal village and says The Canteen itself stays open seven days a week. Ptown Perch is directly across the street.
Tin Pan Alley
Tin Pan Alley at 269 Commercial Street currently publishes lunch, dinner and bar hours and live music. It is also right in the middle of the Commercial Street walking zone, so it is easy to pair with Town Hall, shopping or an evening stroll.

Coffee, groceries and food for the apartment
Markets matter more in winter
One of the easiest ways to make a December trip feel relaxed is to keep breakfast, snacks and at least one simple meal in the apartment. That is especially useful around Christmas and during bad weather.
Winter hours
Angel Foods
467 Commercial Street. Gourmet groceries, prepared foods and sandwiches. The business publishes winter hours of 8 a.m.–5 p.m. and recommends calling ahead because hours can change.
Year-round
Far Land Provisions
150 Bradford Street. Good for coffee, breakfast, sandwiches, baked goods, groceries and prepared food.
For December 24 or 25, shop earlier than you think you need to. Holiday hours are not the same thing as normal winter hours.
Museums, library and community spaces
Good indoor December stops
Provincetown Art Association and Museum
PAAM publishes museum hours of 11 a.m.–5 p.m. daily and until 8 p.m. Fridays. The museum explicitly closes on Christmas Day. PAAM also has guided tours on December 4 and December 18 in its 2026 fall schedule.
Provincetown Public Library
The Provincetown Public Library calls itself a year-round destination and publishes regular public hours throughout the week. The building is worth a visit even if you are not checking out a book, particularly the half-scale schooner upstairs.
Provincetown Commons
The Commons is open year-round, seven days a week. Its current calendar includes The Art of Becoming through December 6 and a Making Light community arts conversation on December 15.
Provincetown Theater
Provincetown Theater runs The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life through December 6, with Thursday–Saturday evening performances and a Sunday matinee.
The month changes by weekend
Shopping and galleries
December shopping is strongest around Holly Folly, when the Provincetown Business Guild actively builds the month around local shops, galleries, markets, strolls and seasonal promotions.
The Canteen Holiday Market adds a compact vendor stop in the center of town. For art, gallery hours vary more than restaurant hours, so we would use Holly Folly's current gallery information or contact a specific gallery before building a trip around it.
That is also why we do not list dozens of galleries here just to make the page look fuller. The useful list is the one that is actually open on your dates.
Three different December experiences
What changes around Holly Folly, Christmas and First Light
- Holly Folly
More shops, events and social energy
The December 4–6 kickoff and expanded weekend programming make this the easiest part of the month for visitors who want shopping and organized events.
- Christmas
Plan December 25 deliberately
Year-round does not mean Christmas Day. PAAM and Fanizzi's are two examples of places that explicitly close on December 25. Confirm your meal and activity plan before the holiday.
- First Light
Winter businesses ramp back up
The Provincetown Business Guild publishes a dedicated What's Open list for the New Year's celebration, including restaurants, shops, galleries, transportation and services.

How we built this list
We're Frank Fay and Jared Tiller, the hosts of Ptown Perch. We included places with current published year-round, winter or December information and avoided treating normal weekly hours as a promise for Christmas Day. We update specific holiday guidance when the business or organizer publishes it.
