Provincetown's queer holiday tradition
What is Holly Folly?
Holly Folly is Provincetown's long-running LGBTQ+ holiday celebration, produced by the Provincetown Business Guild. The 2026 kickoff weekend is December 4–6, with the festival now stretching across weekends throughout December.
Holly Folly began in 1997 as a reason for chosen family to gather in Provincetown during the holiday season. It has grown into a December mix of shopping, performances, food, nightlife and community events, but it still feels very different from a summer theme week. Commercial Street is quieter, you can move around town without the summer crowds, and the holiday programming is woven into businesses and venues that are already part of town.
Past Holly Folly celebrations have included holiday shopping, markets, the Jingle Bell Run, the Boston Gay Men's Chorus, drag events, dance parties, inn strolls, gallery strolls and Snowball bar crawls. These are examples of past programming, not a confirmed 2026 lineup. Check the official Holly Folly page for this year's event dates, venues and ticket links when you are choosing your weekend.
December 4–6 kickoff
Holly Folly 2026 dates
2026 schedule status, checked September 30: The December 4–6 kickoff dates are confirmed. The organizer still displays detailed 2025 listings, with no events listed in its 2026 section. The full 2026 program is pending; last year's performance times, ticket links and sold-out notices do not establish this year's schedule or availability.
| Dates | Focus | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Dec. 4–6 | Kickoff weekend | The Provincetown Business Guild identifies this as the official Holly Folly kickoff weekend. |
| Dec. 5 | Souper Saturday | The PBG's 2026 annual calendar lists the Soup Kitchen in Provincetown fundraiser on the first Saturday of Holly Folly. |
| December weekends | Expanded Holly Folly | The PBG announces expanded Holly Folly weekends. Specific 2026 activities and dates are pending; past weekends have included shopping, markets, gallery and inn strolls, and nightlife. |
| Dec. 31 onward | First Light | New Year's programming becomes its own distinct celebration from December 31 through January 3. |
The first weekend is the clearest choice if you want the traditional Holly Folly kickoff energy. A later December weekend can make more sense if your priority is holiday shopping, a slower town rhythm and time at the Canteen Holiday Market.
Build a weekend around the center of town
What the kickoff weekend feels like
The best part of Holly Folly is how little logistical planning you need once you are in the center of Provincetown. Town Hall, Commercial Street shops, galleries, bars and restaurants are clustered within an easy walk. Instead of driving between attractions, you can move from coffee to shopping to a show to dinner and still pop home between plans.
There are also two useful cultural anchors during the kickoff weekend. Provincetown Theater's 2026 production of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life runs through December 6, with Thursday through Saturday performances at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. PAAM lists a guided museum tour for Friday, December 4 at 11 a.m., and the museum is otherwise open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., until 8 p.m. on Fridays.
Those are good options if you want a weekend that is not entirely nightlife or shopping.
Directly across from Ptown Perch
The Canteen Holiday Market
The Canteen Holiday Market is one of the easiest December traditions to fold into a stay. The Provincetown Chamber describes it as a weekend-focused holiday market with local vendors, food and drinks, while The Canteen itself remains open seven days a week during the season.
Ptown Perch is directly across Commercial Street from The Canteen, so you do not need to make the market a formal outing. You can stop in, drop purchases back at the apartment, warm up, and head back out.
Our advice: treat the market as part of the weekend rather than the entire weekend. Holly Folly works best when you leave room for shopping farther along Commercial Street, a gallery stop, a meal and whatever official event you most want to attend.
A genuinely good time to shop local
Shopping, galleries and the December street scene
Holly Folly is one of the rare Provincetown weekends where shopping is not filler between bigger plans. The Business Guild built the event around supporting local shops and galleries, and the slower pace makes it much easier to actually browse.
Gallery strolls have been part of past Holly Folly celebrations; 2026 dates are still to be confirmed. Many businesses use December for seasonal displays, sales and gift-oriented inventory. If art matters to you, pair the Commercial Street galleries with PAAM at 460 Commercial Street. If you want a warm indoor break, the Provincetown Public Library at 356 Commercial Street is another year-round option in the center of town.
For a broader list of businesses that publish year-round or winter hours, use our What's Open in Provincetown in December guide.
December dining takes a little more intention
Where to eat during Holly Folly
Holly Folly has more dining activity than a random winter weekend, but December still rewards reservations and a backup plan. Several reliable year-round places publish winter service, including Mac's Fish House, Liz's Cafe, Far Land Provisions and Angel Foods. Tin Pan Alley currently publishes lunch, dinner and bar hours in the center of town.
The Canteen is especially convenient during Holly Folly because its Holiday Market and seasonal food program are part of the month. For a sit-down dinner, we would choose where you most want to eat and book that first, then let the rest of the weekend stay loose.
If your trip extends toward Christmas, check holiday-specific hours again. A business being open year-round does not mean it is open on December 25. Fanizzi's, for example, explicitly says it closes on Christmas Day.
Winter transportation is different
Getting to Holly Folly and parking
No regular December fast ferry
Bay State's published 2026 ferry season ends November 15, so Holly Folly is a drive, flight or bus trip rather than a Boston ferry weekend.
Cape Air winter service
Provincetown Tourism lists Cape Air winter service between Boston and Provincetown from November 4, 2026 through May 12, 2027. Boston-to-Provincetown flights are scheduled Wednesday through Saturday at 4:30 p.m.; Provincetown-to-Boston departures are listed Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Parking
Provincetown's 2026 paid-parking season ends November 2. Grace Hall remains open 24 hours and is our usual recommendation for guests driving to Ptown Perch. The Town's seasonal prohibition on parking along the central section of Commercial Street ends October 31, although posted signs, snow routes and temporary restrictions still apply.
220 Commercial Street
Staying at Ptown Perch for Holly Folly
For Holly Folly, the location is the strongest part of the stay. Ptown Perch is above Commercial Street, directly across from The Canteen, with Town Hall, the Lobster Pot Tree, shops, restaurants and nightlife all within the central walking area.

- California king bedroom plus queen sleeper sofa for up to four registered guests.
- Full kitchen, in-unit laundry, heat, fast Wi-Fi and central location.
- Private garden, although December weather determines how much you use it.
- Guest Favorite, Top 5% of eligible Airbnb listings, 5.0 from 12 reviews as checked September 20.
The apartment is reached by an exterior staircase and is not step-free. Commercial Street can be lively during event weekends, so some street activity may be audible indoors. We provide white-noise machines.
One expectation to set clearly: we do not decorate Ptown Perch for Christmas. The holiday atmosphere is outside the door in Provincetown; the apartment itself stays in its usual year-round style.
